The Legacy Continues: Michael’s Journey in Leading a Family Business to its Second Generation

Leading a Family Business to its Second GenerationIn the serene setting of St. Petersburg, Florida, Michael’s story began while his father, Mike, pursued his law degree at Stetson University. Fast forward to the family’s relocation to Flagler County in February 1973, where the roots of their family law firm were first planted in Flagler Beach.

Now, as the firm commemorates its 50th Anniversary, Michael stands as a pivotal figure steering the business toward a new horizon.

Michael graduated from Flagler Palm Coast High School where he was actively engaged in various clubs, student government, and even showcased his athleticism as the punter on the football team.

His journey continued at the University of Central Florida, where he earned an engineering degree while working as a waiter at Outback—a job that not only supported him through college but also introduced him to his future wife, Cathy. Michael gained hands-on experience as a civil engineer with Zeb Cohen engineering firm, honing his skills and expertise in land development.

His path took an intriguing turn as he decided to pursue law, graduating from the University of South Carolina Law School. This propelled him into the realm of construction litigation, where he gained substantial experience in the intricacies of construction and land development law.

In due course, Michael returned to Volusia/Flagler County and joined his father’s law firm, embracing the ‘HESS theory’—an ethos deeply ingrained in their family’s legal practice, advocating work during ‘holidays, evenings, Saturdays and Sundays.’ His dedication and commitment transformed him into one of the area’s preeminent attorneys in land-use and land development, then later branching out to include personal injury law

Upon assuming the role of managing partner, Michael continued the firm’s expansion, nurturing a team of lawyers and a dedicated support staff.

Under his leadership, the firm blossomed, becoming a recognized leader in the legal domain within the Volusia/Flagler area. The firm’s success is not merely due to Michael’s efforts alone. The partners, skilled attorneys and committed support staff have been an integral part of the firm’s growth and reputation. Their longevity and dedication have significantly contributed to the firm’s success.

Over these fifty years, the firm has five staff members who have been there over 10 years: Karolyn Sheekey, 33 years; Kelly DeVore, 29 years; Maria Eckley, 24 years; Michele Hurd, 21 years; and Caroline McNeil, 11 years.

Despite the achievements, Michael remains steadfast in adhering to the ‘HESS theory,’ balancing the demands of legal practice with personal commitments. Looking ahead, Michael eagerly anticipates the prospect of the firm transitioning into the hands of current partners of the firm, Diane Vidal, Vincent Sullivan and William Bosch, keeping the Chiumento core values present.

As the firm moves forward, guided by its rich heritage and Michael’s leadership, it is poised to remain a cornerstone in Flagler County’s legal landscape for many years to come. The saga of a family business is not just about its past but about its continuous evolution led by Michael and the three partners, the vision of the firm is well positioned for the future.
